This is an archived copy of the Long Beach Cares (LongBeachCares.org) website created by Lorenzo Gigliotti in Sept. 2005. Originally designed to raise awareness of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and aggregate the diverse fundraising and special events which took place in Long Beach California to aid victims of Katrina, it also became the official historical chronicle for the Long Beach Cares - Long Beach, CA Helping Long Beach, MS program established by the City of Long Beach, California (under the direction of Lindsay Shields) to help begin the rebuilding effort of Long Beach, Mississippi. January 5, Donaton of Two Trucks

The Long Beach City Council has made a commitment to assist  the hurricane-stricken city of Long Beach, Mississippi. On Tuesday, January 3, City Council approved the donation of vehicles as part of the Long Beach Cares: Long Beach, CA Helping Long Beach, MS, an ongoing assistance effort to help the city rebuild its infrastructure.

Long Beach Cares is an extension of the City’s response to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Long Beach Fire Department is helping to launch the campaign on January 5, by donating a heavy duty dump truck and pick up truck that will be transported by rail thanks to the generosity of Union Pacific.

Background Information:

The City of Long Beach, Mississippi, population 17,000, was completely devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The only structure left standing in the city’s downtown was a bank vault.  In December, FEMA provided two trailers to start rebuilding City Hall.   It will take years for the City of Long Beach, MS to rebuild.
